Key members of the design team for the Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center have been selected.

Dallas-based HKS Inc., in partnership with Barker Barrios Architects Inc. and Anderson & Associates, both of Orlando, were ranked as the top project architectural team by a procurement committee made up of representatives from the city of Orlando and Orlando Performing Arts Center. Contract negotiations are currently taking place.

Other members of the design team announced Nov. 6 include:

  • Theater planning - Theatre Projects Consultants of South Norwalk, Conn.
  • Acoustical design - Artec Consultants of New York.
  • Theater costing - Donnell Consultants Inc. of Tampa.

The center's board of directors previously selected Houtson-based Hines as the project's development partner and Barton Myers Associates of Los Angeles as the design architect.

By early 2008, OPAC expects to finalize the project design team. The design stage will continue through 2009. The organization plans to select a construction manager of the project during the third quarter of 2008 and the building contractors in third quarter of 2009. Ground breaking is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2009, with completion expected in the fall of 2012.

The $425 million performing arts center will include a 2,800-seat hall for large-scale productions; a 1,800-seat acoustical hall for concert, opera, dance and drama; a 300-seat multi-purpose hall for small groups; a rehearsal hall; educational space; and administrative offices.

The center will be located on a nine-acre site bordered by Orange and Rosalind avenues and South and Anderson streets.
