Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts - Design: Renderings

The Dr. Phillips Center represents a defining moment in Central Florida’s history. Imagine a vibrant urban destination for multicultural artistry of regional, national and international standing – a cultural and entertainment center where creativity and education converge to nurture local artists, audiences and students.

MAGNOLIA VIEW

The exterior of the Center is a crowning architectural statement for Orlando. The mission of the Center drove the design creating a warm and inviting destination where everyone walks through one front door; an environment encouraging participation and new experiences. The building says “look at me, but come inside.”

The omnipresence of water, light, and other aspects of the natural ecology were also integrated into the design of the facility and the outdoor plaza. The extensive roof line was designed to provide protection from the elements while also becoming a major component of the aesthetic idea.

PLAZA VIEW

The performance plaza will be a true gathering place for the community energized by a mix of commercial and retail amenities. Water features, shady trees, seating and open areas will be ideal for all types of activities from a workday lunch to a 3,000 person festival.

2,700± SEAT WALT DISNEY THEATER

This amplified theater, to be named by Walt Disney World Co., is the largest performance space. Inspired by classic outdoor theaters, the blue side walls and ceiling simulate an evening sky. The major surfaces in the room are adorned with cherry wood and woven copper. The design also references some of the most successful theaters by offering exceptional sightlines with tiered seating close to the stage. Amplified sound will be loud but clear with strong bass support, superb sound imaging and clearly understandable reinforcement for actors and singers. An aisle of the orchestra level depicts the opening scene of the touring production of Disney's "THE LION KING."

300± SEAT JIM & ALEXIS PUGH THEATER

This community theater, designed for local arts organizations, education, as well as the University of Central Florida's performing arts program, is centrally positioned on the second floor with its entry off the lobby rotunda. The intimate space is designed in a horseshoe configuration with a thrust stage, unlike the square black box that is typical of smaller theaters. The stage is flexible to accommodate different performance genres. Acoustics offer strength and clarity of the spoken word. The orchestra level seating can transform to a flat floor for performance, banquets and events. Balcony facades are aluminum with specks of back-lit glass embedded to create the illusion of sparkling stars encircling the room. Bright colored art work is incorporated in the ceiling panels, which is also repeated in the seating upholstery to energize the theater.

1,700± SEAT MULTI-FORM THEATER

The multi-form theater is an intimate and warm room that will transform its shape and acoustics to ideally accommodate symphony, opera and ballet. The flexibility of the stage is achieved with a moving shell and towers that can be arranged to create rooms ideally shaped for each art form. The natural acoustics will rival the world's best concert and opera performance spaces.

The theater also has the capacity to quickly and seamlessly convert its orchestra level into a flat floor ball room. In flat floor mode, it will be Central Florida’s premiere event space for weddings, conferences and opening night galas. Rich materials such as wood, plaster and metallic accents combined with the curved and continuous balconies enhance the room's sense of intimacy and grandeur. The shape, materials and acoustics will transform the patron into the magic of the music, dance and theater on its stage.

LOBBY

The Lobby is widely considered to be the "theater before the theater" and the performance here lives up to all expectations. It's a soaring five-story dramatic space with ample room for a grand staircase and wide open views of upper floors. As a backdrop, gentle curves in the lobby's "wave wall" lend stunning visual interest and give guests an invitation to explore. Underfoot, black and white terrazzo flooring serves as a counterpoint to the rich palette of the Center's signature citrus colors. Splashes of those same colors help direct guests to their appropriate theater from multiple floors of mix and mingle spaces, lounging alcoves and relaxing areas for food and drink.

A large cocktail bar, intimate seating arrangements and a full complement of monitors and TV screens comfortably connects guests to live theater performances as well as the world outside.
