The Firebird:

Enchantment, romance and the mysterious Firebird herself are the inspiration for Igor Stravinsky’s classic and masterful score based on Russian legend of an exotic bird’s magical protective feathers.

This passionate story begins with the Prince’s encounter with the strange Firebird in an enchanted forest controlled by the spell of the Demon Ruler. After being captured by the Prince, this vibrant bird secures her release by offering him one of her magical feathers for his use in times of danger.  Off she flies into the darkness. As the Prince makes his way through the forest he encounters many strange creatures including a band of princesses. To his good fortune, the forest’s magical golden apples spark his love for one Princess in particular.

Confronted by the Demon Ruler, the Prince is turned into stone as the evil ruler seeks to destroy the young lovers. However, the Prince is able to pull out his one magical feather just in the nick of time and the Firebird appears. Together they kill the Demon. The spell is broken and the Prince and Princess marry.

Orlando Ballet’s performance to Stravinsky’s classic and thrilling music offers a truly enchanting evening  for the audience to experience the breathtaking highs and lows of passion, good and evil all woven around the magic and fire of the Firebird herself. This contemporary production, with fresh choreography by Artistic Director Robert Hill, promises to be a magical event.

To Familiar Spaces In Dream:

Jessica Lang's compelling original work with music by Philip Glass, John Cage, and Craig Armstrong. This contemporary performance includes a striking set of eight white columns representing the white keys on the piano. Lang's choreography builds a deepening emotional current that, by the end, appears to engulf dancers and stage alike. To Familiar Spaces in Dream digs deep, charting rich new visual territory for the company and its audience.

Cultural Fusion returns to the arts center following their successful run of Crowns - A Gospel Musical Play with Anna in the Tropics, winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize.

Anna in the Tropics is a poignant and poetic play set in Florida in 1929 in a Cuban–American cigar factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand and "lectors" are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics and the American dream prove a volatile combination.

"The words of Nilo Cruz waft from a stage like a scented breeze. They sparkle and prickle and swirl, enveloping those who listen in both a specific place and time—and in timeless passions that touch us all…In Anna in the Tropics, Cruz claims his place as a storyteller of intricate craftsmanship and poetic power…[Cruz] has turned out many wonderful plays—but none more shimmeringly beautiful than Anna in the Tropics." — Miami Herald

"In evoking the lost Cuban–American world of a Florida cigar factory in 1929, Mr. Cruz has created a work as wistful and affectingly ambitious as its characters. Anna in the Tropics reaches for the artistic heavens…" — New York Times

"…enticing and exotic…entrancingly lovely…" — Variety

These music icons are performing only 3 shows in the U.S. this year. We are so honored to welcome these legendary performers to the Dr. Phillips Center.

For five decades, and with 14 Grammy® Awards, Herbie Hancock transcended genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock.

Jazz pioneer Wayne Shorter, at 82, is still influencing a generation of musicians and fans as a humble master who created a timeless vocabulary. One of the most influential saxophonists and composers in the pantheon of modern music, let alone jazz, Wayne Shorter has been regarded as a pioneer since his emergence in the 1950’s. His trajectory has restlessly embodied continual exploration and unencumbered momentum.

Opera returns to the Dr. Phillips Center with Opera Orlando. The company, formerly Florida Opera Theatre, returns to the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater with a creative marriage of a play-within-a-play featuring Mozart’s Impresario and Poulenc's Les Mamelles De Tiresias. Opera stars are joined by the Opera Orlando Children's Chorus and are supported by members of the Orlando Philharmonic, all led by guest conductor Michael Sakir. Savvy Director in Residence, Eric Pinder, will serve doubly as stage director & script adapter bringing these two comedies to life. The star-studded cast includes local favorites Julia Foster & Gabriel Preisser & several others from all over the country.

It's a celebration of the lighter side of the art form as Opera Orlando brings a boisterous birth to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. In this unique, premiere pairing, Mozart's classic comedy of a theatre impresario deciding between two operatic divas is updated to modern day Orlando, Florida where a struggling company desperate to do anything to survive must enlist the financial help of a flamboyant opera patron. He only makes one request, that the company uses his 2 new soprano flings, Everly Shrills & Bethany Squeals.

With all the backing needed, the Impresario can now do a piece he's always dreamed of - Les Mamelles de Tiresias or The Breasts of Tiresias, a surrealist piece by Francis Poulenc. The absurdist, gender bending plot starts with a housewife who is sick of doing chores and serving her husband, so she removes her breasts (two balloons) and becomes a man (Tiresias) which leads to her husband taking on the role of the woman and now having to produce babies by himself which he does, only too well...

Before she was Carole King, Superstar, she was Carole King, teenage songwriter. Her music would become the soundtrack to a generation.

She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice.

BEAUTIFUL tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than BEAUTIFUL music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

Grammy® Award-winning musicians Chris Botti and Joshua Bell create a virtuoso night that crosses musical boundaries to include classical, rhythm & blues and jazz. After his sold-out concert at the Dr. Phillips Center last year, Chris Botti returns, bringing with him one of the greatest violinists in the world, Joshua Bell. Together, alongside a full orchestra, their one-night only concert is sure to be a standout event of the season.

Since the release of his 2004 critically acclaimed CD When I Fall In Love, Chris Botti has become the largest-selling American instrumental artist. His success crosses over to audiences usually reserved for pop music and his ongoing association with PBS led to four #1 jazz albums, as well as multiple Gold, Platinum and Grammy Awards. Most recently, his latest album, Impressions, won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album at the 2013 55th Grammy Awards. Performing worldwide and selling more than four million albums, he found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre.

Joining Botti is lauded violinist Joshua Bell, often referred to as “the poet of the violin” and considered “the greatest American violinist active today” (The Boston Herald). Recording numerous movie soundtracks, including the Oscar®-winning score for The Red Violin, and more than 40 albums since his first recording at age 18, Bell’s 2014 Bach album (recorded with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields) debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Chart. Having collaborated with A-listers including Wynton Marsalis, Josh Groban, and Placido Domingo, he has performed on every continent except Antartica and has all the prestigious accolades of a superstar classical musician.
