Tony Bennett - Wednesday, March 9, 2016
To say he’s a legend doesn’t begin to cover this icon’s past success and his present popularity as one of the most celebrated artists of all time. From his big break in 1949 when he was discovered by Bob Hope to his 18 Grammy Awards, his Emmy award-winning TV specials, his 24 Top 40 songs, and his legendary duets with everyone from Aretha Franklin to Lady Gaga, no one else in popular American music has recorded for so long and at such a high level of excellence as Tony Bennett. In the last 10 years alone he has sold 10 million records. New York Magazine said, “…his voice is still a technical marvel, and no one else on Earth can make a lyric written eight decades ago sound as natural as a conversation at a coffee shop.”

Parachute - "Stripped"

Showing October 7

Show date: October 7, 2015
Show time: 7:30 P.M.
Tickets start at $25.00
Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater

Parachute took root in the college town of Charlottesville, Virginia, where the group honed its mix of pop/rock, funk, and contemporary blue-eyed soul under the original name Sparky's Flaw. Formed by high school students Will Anderson (vocals, guitar), Johnny Stubblefield (drums), Christopher "Kit" French (saxophone, keyboards), Alex Hargrave (bass), and Nate McFarland (guitar), Sparky's Flaw generated a healthy buzz around town and eventually became popular at the nearby University of Virginia, where they opened for Robert Randolph. After gaining more popularity with an independently released EP, 2005's One Small Step, the guys partnered with Red Light Management and later signed with Smash Records, an imprint of the recently revived Mercury Records.

Before entering their final year at the University of Virginia, they released a self-titled EP in August 2007 and several months later, the band changed their name to Parachute and contributed a song to the national TV campaign for Nivea. In 2009, they released Losing Sleep which marked Parachute's major-label debut and peaked at #40 on the Billboard charts. The band returned to the studio to record their sophomore album 2011’s The Way it Was followed by Overnight (2013) which hit the #3 spot on iTunes album charts and marked the band’s highest chart position, reaching #15 fifteen on the Billboard Top 200.

Parachute continues to tour around the country having performed with artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Gavin DeGraw, NeedtoBreathe and Andy Grammer.  In 2013, they co-headlined a national tour with The Plain White T’s.  They’ve also performed before crowds of over a million at a New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square. Parachute as appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS’ The Early Show. Their songs have been featured on MTV’s The City along with CW’s One Tree Hill, Vampire Diaries and 90210.

In May 2014, guitarist Nate McFarland announced that he was leaving the band to pursue his MBA at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business.

The band is currently in the studio working on their next album expected to be released in 2015. The hypnotic new single “Crave” is already gaining traction with radio stations around the country. Mixed by Tony Maserati (Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Nick Jonas), the single speaks to the relentless emotion felt in a passionate love affair.

The Hot Sardines

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra begins the 2015/2016 Season with a bang!

Hailed by Forbes Magazine as “one of the best jazz bands in NYC today,” The Hot Sardines are the brainchild of stride-piano virtuoso Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and lead singer Miz Elizabeth, who combine with the Sardine ensemble of powerhouse musicians — and their very own tap dancer — to play “hot jazz” as it was in the era when live music was king…with a little glamour, a little grit, and a lot of passion. Together with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, these masters fuse the musical influences from New York, Paris, and New Orleans that were nurtured through the Prohibition era, the Great Depression, WWII, and beyond.

This concert is part of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s Pops Series at Bob Carr Theater. Tickets on sale September 1, 2015. For more information, or to subscribe to this series, call 407.770.0071

Born July 30, 1941, in Ottawa into a tight-knit Canadian family, Paul Anka didn’t waste much time getting his life in music started. He sang in the choir at church and studied piano. He honed his writing skills with journalism courses, even working for a spell at the Ottawa Citizen. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. He performed at every amateur night he could get to in his mother’s car, unbeknownst to her of course. Soon after, he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest for IGA Food Stores that required him to spend three months collecting soup can labels. It was there his dream was solidified, he was going to make it as a singer composer; there was not a doubt in his young tenacious mind.

In 1956, he convinced his parents to let him travel to Los Angeles, where he called every record company in the phone book looking for an audition. A meeting with Modern Records led to the release of Anka’s first single, “Blau-Wile Deverest Fontaine.” It was not a hit, but Anka kept plugging away, going so far to sneak into Fats Domino’s dressing room to meet the man and his manager in Ottawa. When Anka returned New York in 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records. He played him a batch of songs that included “Diana” – Costa was duly enthusiastic about the potential of the young singer and songwriter. The rapid and enormous success of “Diana” – his first number one hit – made him a star.

“They are all very autobiographical,” says Anka of his early hits. “I was alone, traveling, girls screaming, and I never got near them. I’m a teenager and feeling isolated and all that. That becomes ‘Lonely Boy.’ At record hops, I’m up on stage and all these kids are holding each other with heads on each other’s shoulders. Then I have to go have dinner in my room because there are thousands of kids outside the hotel — ‘Put Your Head on My Shoulder’ was totally that experience."
