Spencers: Theatre of Illusion

Showing January 17

As many young boys are, Kevin Spencer was intrigued by magic at a very early age. He remembers sitting in front of the television and being fascinated by the magicians he saw there. His parents bought him a magic kit at age eight and he worked hard on each of those tricks, performing them for friends and family.

In the seventh grade, Kevin's focus changed from magic to music.  His enchantment and considerable talent with the piano started him on a journey toward becoming a concert pianist. And, then came Doug Henning...

Henning revived the fascination Kevin had with magic and he shared his attention between magic and music throughout high school. Upon graduation, he left home for college, taking his magic and music with him. While attending college in Chattanooga, he worked in one of the local magic shops part-time. This exposed him to new effects and gave him excellent experience in demonstrating them for others.

Visiting his parents in Indiana during a college break, he had the opportunity to catch a Doug Henning performance at the Holiday Star Theatre in Merrillville, Indiana. He scribbled a note to Mr. Henning asking for a moment of his time following the show. He gave that note to an usher who assured him he would get it backstage. About ten minutes later, the usher returned to tell Kevin that he could meet Mr. Henning at the stage door after the performance. He was ecstatic!

Arriving at the backstage door, he found hundreds of people waiting to see Doug. He asked around and found many of them were from area magic clubs or magicians - many of whom had also forwarded a note to Mr. Henning. Kevin assumed he would not have the opportunity to meet Henning face-to-face and decided to start the long drive home.

Much to his surprise, Henning's road manager came out and asked, "Is Kevin Spencer in the crowd?" Kevin identified himself and was told, "Mr. Henning would like to see you in his dressing room." Kevin was stunned...as were the others waiting to meet Henning. Kevin was escorted to the dressing room where he spent more than an hour talking with Doug about touring with a large production and life on the road.

Henning was warm and personable, just as he had been on stage. He introduced Kevin to his management staff and they invited him to ask any questions he wanted. It was an extraordinary experience and one Kevin will never forget. Throughout the years of Henning's tours, he always had time to see Kevin and his wife, Cindy, and offer encouragement.

Today, The Spencers tour with one of the largest theatrical illusion shows in the nation. And they are some of the most respected artists in their field. Spencer is the co-founder of Healing of Magic and the author of the Hocus Focus curriculum for special education students.

For the last eighteen years, Bill Maher has set the boundaries of where funny, political talk can go on American television. First on “Politically Incorrect” (Comedy Central, ABC, 1993-2002), and for the last seven years on HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher’s combination of unflinching honesty and big laughs have garnered him twenty-one Emmy nominations. In October of 2008, this same combination was on display in Maher’s uproarious and unprecedented swipe at organized religion, “Religulous,” directed by Larry Charles (“Borat”). The documentary has gone on to become the 7th Highest Grossing Documentary ever.

In addition to his television program – which has featured such regular visitors as John Edwards, Ben Affleck, Robin Williams, Arianna Huffington, Alec Baldwin and Michael Moore – Maher has written four bestsellers: “True Story,” “Does Anybody Have a Problem with That?  Politically Incorrect’s Greatest Hits”, “When You Ride Alone, You Ride with Bin Laden”, “New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer” and most recently “The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody but Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass.”

Maher started his career as a stand-up comedian in 1979, and still performs at least fifty dates a year in Las Vegas and in sold out theaters all across the country. Jason Mraz & Raining Jane

Showing February 15

The way Jason Mraz sees it, everything in life boils down to people saying “yes”. “Yes inspires creativity. It’s what allows creativity to occur,” he says. “Yes is love. Yes is what gave us life. We’re all here because two people said yes.” Saying yes has given this singer, songwriter, musician, photographer, filmmaker, and social activist a life beyond his wildest dreams. Since getting his start 15 years ago performing in coffeehouses in his adopted city of San Diego, Mraz has brought his positive message and soulful, folk-pop sound to rapt audiences around the world through his recordings, vibrant live performances, and philanthropic efforts. Along the way, he has earned platinum or multi-platinum certifications in more than 20 countries for his various releases, sold 48 million singles, made pop history with his record-breaking classic single, “I’m Yours,” racked up two Grammy Awards among six nominations, won a prestigious Hal David Songwriter Hall of Fame Award, performed in amphitheaters and arenas across the globe, and sold out such iconic venues as The Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Garden, and London’s O2 Arena. Saying yes has been good to Jason Mraz.

So it’s not surprising that he would choose that word as the title for his fifth and first-ever acoustic album, which he wrote and recorded with his friends in the L.A.-based folk-rock band Raining Jane. “The whole album is the product of yes,” he says. “Whether it’s Raining Jane saying yes to our annual songwriting retreats, which led to this collection of songs, or my label giving us the green light to let them become my next album. If anyone on our journey had said no, we wouldn't be where we are. ‘Yes’ really is the connector.” And, of course, Mraz will be on the road with Raining Jane. “These women are my friends,” he says. “I've known them for so long and now we're getting the opportunity to take the album on the road and share our passion-fueled hobby with others.

Initially released by their local label Elestial Sound, their self-titled debut soon became seen as the sound of Florida, drawing loose comparisons to Stereolab, Four Tet, and Bjork. Soon it attracted the most unlikely of label bosses, Skrillex, who signed the band to his OWSLA label that same year and gave the album a full-scale release, with remixes by Araab Muzik, Star Slinger, and TokiMonsta. Tony-Award Winning Broadway powerhouse Idina Menzel has a diverse career on the stage, in film and television, and in music.

Menzel, lauded for her strong yet emotional performances, recently culminated a highly successful international orchestra tour. Accompanied by world-renowned symphonies, Menzel played to sold-out audiences and demonstrated why she is one of the great performers of her time. The Denver Post dubbed her "The Streisand of her generation," while The New York Times praised Menzel as "an entertainer with a phenomenal voice...Diana Ross with ten times the stamina and lung power." In March, Menzel released a CD and DVD entitled Idina Menzel Live: Barefoot at the Symphony, a live concert with an orchestra led by legendary composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch, filmed at The Royal Conservatory's Koerner Hall in Toronto, Canada. The concert also aired nationally on PBS stations.

Garnering huge critical acclaim, Menzel reached superstardom on Broadway with her Tony Award-winning performance as Elphaba, the misunderstood green girl, in the blockbuster WICKED and in her Tony-nominated role as Maureen in the revolutionary RENT. This season, Menzel reprised her role on "Glee," FOX's smash hit television series, as Shelby Corcoran, Rachel's biological mother. A skillful songwriter, Menzel also performs and records her own music. With three albums to her credit, she toured nationally last year, playing to sold-out houses to promote her most recent effort, "I Stand," which was produced by Glen Ballard and released by Warner Bros. Records.

On Broadway, in addition to WICKED and RENT, Menzel appeared as Sheila in the Encores! production of HAIR and starred as Amneris in Broadway's AIDA. In London, she premiered the Broadway hit WICKED in the West End and received the Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She also starred in Michael John LaChiusa's musical SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE directed by Ted Sperling at The Public Theater. Other Off-Broadway credits include the pre-Broadway, production of RENT and THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES.

Menzel's film credits include Disney's romantic fable, Enchanted where she appeared opposite Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams; Rent, in which she reprised her role as Maureen; and a co- starring role in Robert Towne's Ask the Dust, opposite Salma Hayek and Colin Farrell.

Philanthropy is also important to Menzel who created the A BroaderWay Foundation in 2010 with her husband Taye Diggs. This organization is dedicated to offering girls from underserved communities an outlet for self-expression and creativity through arts-centered programs. The emphasis is on building self-esteem, developing leadership qualities and striving for personal and social achievement.
