Percussionist Sammy Figueroa returns with a tribute to the great Cal Tjader (with the blessing of the Tjader family). Throughout his four-decade career, Cal was a pivotal figure in the development of Latin jazz, acid jazz and fusion. His style is instantly recognizable for blending cool harmonies and infectious rhythms into a refreshing atmosphere simmering with energy. Numbers like “Soul Sauce (Wachi-Wara),” “Cuban Fantasy,” “Afro-Blue,” “The Continental,” “Mambo Mindoro,” and “Nights in Tunisia” display the intoxicating mix of swing and harmony that Cal Tjader brought to his unique brand of Latin jazz.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

A prolific session player and worldclass percussionist, Sammy Figueroa has collaborated with an extensive list of renowned artists, including David Bowie, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and more, to name a few. Known for his versatile style, Sammy plays a variety of percussion instruments, including the congas, cabasa, shekere, bongo, güiro and more. In addition to his two Grammy Nominations for Best Latin Jazz, Sammy has been honored with numerous awards, including two NARAS Awards for Percussionist of the Year, two Drummie Awards for Best Hand Percussion and the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Best Percussionist.
