ABOUT THE ARTIST
Even if you haven’t seen the term “gypsy jazz” before, there’s a good chance you’ve heard this signature French sound. Making his Judson’s Live return, French guitarist Stephane Wrembel is an ambassador to this jazz style that dates back almost a century, featuring improvised melodies backed by a distinctive, quick swing rhythm. With his combination of world-class guitar-playing and adventurous musical spirit, Stephane’s range is unmatched.
Raised in the birthplace of gypsy jazz master Django Reinhart, Stephane has had a storied career of keeping this style of French-Romani music alive. He has headlined Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Town Hall in NYC and The Lyon Opera House in France. He has also toured and shared stages with master violinist Mark O’Connor, Sam Bush, Stochelo Rosenberg, Esperanza Spalding and Al Di Meola. He has dazzled audiences at Montreal Jazz Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Django Reinhardt Festival in France, Ellnora Guitar Festival, Caramoor Jazz Festival and many others. He has toured Canada, France, Israel, UK, India and Nigeria. His song "Big Brother" appeared on the soundtrack for Woody Allen's film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. In 2011 he again collaborated with Allen, composing "Bistro Fada,” the theme song for Allen's film Midnight in Paris.
