Arts for Every Life:

A Year of Acoustic Excellence:
Happy Anniversary, Steinmetz Hall

The multiform, multipurpose theater completes one year of operation on January 14–having hosted 139k+ guests for 140+ performances and events–and will commemorate the milestone with the new Great American Orchestra Series

Our one-of-a-kind, acoustically remarkable theater, Steinmetz Hall, celebrated its first full year of operation on January 14. We will commemorate this milestone and launch the space into its second year of excellent programming with the Great American Orchestra Series, featuring the internationally renowned classical ensembles of The Cleveland Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Over the past year, we have presented, produced and hosted over 139k guests across 140 shows and events in Steinmetz Hall, from world-renowned artists to community performances to a philanthropy wrestling event. The diversity of the space in form and function has allowed us to bring more guests together to experience a wider array of diverse entertainment, ultimately helping us pursue the Dr. Phillips Center’s vision, Arts For Every Life®.

The unique theater was a dream come true for performers and performing arts lovers in our region, who had been awaiting the hall's creation since it was first envisioned over two decades ago. Since its opening, Steinmetz Hall has proudly received praise and recognition from international, national and local guests and performers alike, who have enjoyed memorable experiences in the space. The world-class theater has filled our community with pride, positioned the Dr. Phillips Center as an innovative trailblazer in the arts industry and helped elevate Orlando as the cultural heart of the Southeast.

Steinmetz Hall is a feat of engineering that transforms to accommodate any performance type. Over the past year, the 62-foot-high, 27-foot-deep one-million-pound concert shell has traveled the length of seven football fields at two feet per minute on heavy-duty, steel train tracks to convert into three stage configurations including proscenium, recital and concert and multiple house configurations. Its movable seating has allowed for a wider range of functions than a traditional concert hall and accommodates from 1,410 to 1,761 guests, depending on the performance or event.

The space itself is constantly changing with each performance, but the sound quality remains excellent, thanks to 437 18-inch steel and rubber isolation pads positioned between the theater and outside frame, which act as shock absorbers to deaden sound from traffic, passing trains and other ambient noise, allowing guests to take a break from the outside world and immerse themselves entirely in their experience.

The hall's infinite layout options and exceptional sound has created the perfect space for orchestral concerts, operas, dance, recording artists, speakers, galas, banquets and more.

During its first year of operation, we are proud to have welcomed the following diverse group of artists and performing arts groups to the Steinmetz Hall stage.
