Donor Spotlight: Alison and Graeme Lockwood
How an Orlando Couple Turned Stroke Recovery into Arts Advocacy
Alison and Graeme Lockwood have called Orlando home for over 40 years—but their story starts in Ohio. Though raised in very different households (Alison’s parents were classically trained musicians while Graeme’s world revolved around sports), they quickly found common ground in each other, and later, in the arts.
After what Graeme describes as “falling in love immediately,” it was Alison who opened his eyes to live performance. One of their earliest shared memories was at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Graeme surprised her with tickets for Christmas, and the two dressed to the nines, much to the surprise of the business-casual locals around them. That night, something clicked. It was more than a date; it was the beginning of a lifelong love for the arts.
What Inspires the Lockwoods to Give Back Through the Arts
Their journey through music, theater and performing arts blossomed over decades, until life hit a pause. Seven years ago, Graeme experienced a traumatic brain injury that led to a stroke. Recovery was long and challenging, but Graeme pushed forward, supported by Alison and their community.
“I feel great,” he said. “It was a challenge and continues to be, but it’s okay. It makes you appreciate everything else that much more, quite frankly.”
So, when the couple first learned about STROKESTRA®, an innovative stroke rehabilitation program that drives patient-led recovery through group creative music-making workshops, they immediately felt a personal connection. They attended a performance and the impact was palpable.
“To be able to be with people who are in the middle of it,” Graeme shared, “They’ll say the program is what makes them get out of bed in the morning. We love being with them.”
The Lockwoods made their first-ever donation to STROKESTRA®, a gift born out of both gratitude and empathy, and an easy decision to make.
From Donors to Devoted Fans
Today, they’re more than donors. They’re regular guests and fans in the audience, catching everything from Jackson Browne to Dear Evan Hansen. But for Alison and Graeme, it’s about more than tickets and seats. It’s about making a difference.
“The center is doing so much for so many people,” Alison said. “Our community built this place—and now we need to support it. This is a treasure, and it doesn’t run by itself.”
