Partner Spotlight: Opera Orlando and the Art of Acoustics

Opera Orlando is well-regarded for producing compelling classic and original operas for Central Florida audiences. Dr. Phillips Center has hosted many of these works since its inception, specifically within the acoustically pristine Steinmetz Hall. Gabriel Preisser, General Director of Opera Orlando, describes what makes Steinmetz Hall a remarkable place for experiencing the exquisite art of opera. Technical Achievements–How Steinmetz Hall Contributes to the Opera Experience

Quality acoustics are one of the most important elements of the show experience. The beauty of the piece is brought out when the sound of actors, singers or musicians are heard with clarity and depth. Steinmetz Hall opened in 2022 and is renowned as one of the world’s most acoustically perfect spaces and is the ideal environment for opera.

Classic opera avoids technical amplification, such as microphones, and relies entirely on the natural sound of singers and instruments of the orchestra. Steinmetz Hall was designed to achieve an N1 sound rating, the lowest level that humans can detect sound. This creates the perfect setting to hear the pure, unamplified beauty of the human voice soaring over a live orchestra.

The multi-form venue is one of the few theaters around the globe that can transform in shape, seating and sound. With adjustable stage, walls and flooring, the space can be changed to accommodate different shows and events. One night it can be arranged into a proscenium theater for the opera and the next it can be a concert hall with 360-degree seating. To accomplish this, the flooring system lifts and rotates 22 rows of seats at orchestra level to store them upside down under the floor.

Soundproof spaces are crucial for fully enjoying an opera. With thoughtful design, performances can occur simultaneously in all four venues at the Dr. Phillips Center without interfering with one another. Steinmetz Hall’s N1 rating is achieved by isolating the room using rubber pads at its base, cherry wood interior (a friendly surface for audio) and a system of 70 adjustable banners. Additionally, Florida soil tends to transmit noises well, so that aspect was kept in mind during the theatre’s creation to prevent outside noise. With its flexible structure and effective soundproofing, Steinmetz Hall is an exceptional backdrop for Opera Orlando.
