Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater: Supporting Regional Arts at Dr. Phillips Center
Did you know that in 2024 alone, more than 50 regional arts groups performed at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, many taking the stage inside Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater? It’s a space where local talent shines and audiences can experience the vibrancy of Central Florida’s arts scene up close.
We invite you to step inside a theater that has become a true home for regional artists, new ideas and memorable performances.
A stage for regional arts groups
Over the past decade, more than 190 unique regional arts organizations including groups like Tap Into Theater Academy, Flamenco Del Sol, the University of Central Florida and many others who continue to shape our local cultural landscape have called Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater home.
In 2024 alone, 365 of the 700 performances presented at Dr. Phillips Center were produced by regional arts groups. Inside Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, audiences experience the depth of Central Florida’s theatrical talent through productions like Little Shop of Horrors and Stranger Sings, both featuring all-local casts.
The theater is also a place where original and new works come to life. Brooklyn’s Bridge, for example, highlighted the strength of Orlando’s creative community with an all-local cast of actors, musicians and designers during its 17-show run. Educational programs thrive here too, from Spoken Word residencies to kids' summer camp showcases that spotlight the next generation of artists.
Honoring a visionary leader
From 2003 to 2022, Jim Pugh guided the organization from concept to completion, serving nearly two decades as chairman. His time, expertise and steadfast determination were instrumental in transforming the vision of a performing arts center in Orlando into reality.
Alongside his wife, Alexis, Jim was the very first donor for the project, making a gift that named the 294-seat Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater and set the tone for what followed. Since then, the intimate venue has welcomed thousands of regional artists and performances.
In October 2025, the arts center unveiled a sculpture honoring more than two decades of Jim’s leadership — a lasting reflection of his vision, commitment and enduring impact on the future of the arts in Central Florida.
Art that elevates the experience
Step inside the theater and you’ll immediately notice details that set it apart from a typical community venue. Silver box seating accented with marble details surrounds the space, while an eye-catching ceiling installation draws the eye upward.
The ceiling artwork is the work of artist Tom McGrath, who created 32 individual pieces using painted Barrisol—a stretch polymer material. Together, they form a striking visual element that enhances every performance.
A space that transforms
Thanks to the Nivoflex floor, this theater transforms, making it the perfect space for private events ranging from cabarets and cocktail parties to banquets and wedding receptions.
Each room transformation is a hands-on process for our production team, requiring the manual installation or removal of every bolt and component. Depending on the setup, a full reconfiguration can take anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hours—ensuring the space is perfectly suited for each unique event.
Whether you’re attending a local production, celebrating a milestone or discovering a new regional arts group, we invite you to experience the creativity and talent that make Central Florida’s arts community thrive inside Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.
