Dr. Phillips Center’s Applause Awards Marks Biggest Year Yet, Welcomes New Director Richard J. Hinds

Orlando native and Broadway star Michael James Scott returns to host ceremony on May 30

Orlando, FL— Tickets for the 12th Annual Applause Awards are officially on sale, with the event scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Walt Disney Theater.  Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts also revealed that Richard J. Hinds has been named the program’s new director and choreographer.

Reminiscent of the Tony Awards, this annual event celebrates top talent in regional high schools including teachers and students. This year’s 12th annual program includes 400 individuals with 70 productions from 46 schools across 11 counties in Central and North Florida, marking the highest participation since the program’s inception.

“We are excited to welcome Richard J. Hinds as director this year, he brings fresh energy and bold ideas that will reimagine the Applause Awards and elevate the experience,” said Ryan Simpson, director of education at Dr. Phillips Center. “This year marks our biggest year yet, with seven new schools joining the program—an exciting milestone that reflects the growing impact and reach of this incredible celebration of high school musical theatre.”

Hinds brings extensive Broadway and National touring experience, having worked on productions including Company, Come From Away and Disney’s Newsies. He has also served as an associate on Broadway and West End productions including Titanique, Elf and Jekyll and Hyde, as well as the National Theatre’s production of Here Lies Love.

“I am beyond thrilled to be joining the production this year,” said Richard J. Hinds, director & choreographer of Applause Awards. “The talent in this area is truly top-notch and it is an absolute honor to have the opportunity to work alongside such inspiring students. Together, we are going to create an evening that audiences will remember for years to come.”

Returning to host the ceremony is Broadway celebrity and Dr. Phillips High School alum, Michael James Scott, who will host alongside program alumni George Eastman and Arianna Parilla.

The Applause Awards offers all participating college-bound students a chance to earn a scholarship. To date, Dr. Phillips Center has awarded more than $239,500 in scholarships through the program.
