Madame Butterfly

Opera Orlando invites you into Puccini's most devastatingly beautiful work. Cio-Cio San marries an American naval officer who almost immediately returns to the States. She waits three years — certain he will come back, but is she ready when he does. Puccini surrounds her story with music of such tenderness and such inevitability that audiences who have seen it a dozen times still find themselves undone by the final act. There is no preparation for what happens in that moment. There is only the music, the voice, and the whole room holding their breath "...ooooh, OPERA!”

Soprano Yeawon Jun makes her Opera Orlando debut in the title role, joined by tenor Isaac Hurtado as Lt. Pinkerton. Kalena Bovell — the 2024 Sphinx Medal of Excellence recipient and the first Black woman to conduct an opera in Canada — makes her Company debut on the podium. Stage direction by Rebecca A. Herman in her own Company debut.
