Student Spotlight: Addison Murphy

From the moment she stepped into her very first theatre class at Dr. Phillips Center’s AdventHealth School of the Arts, then just four years old, Addison Murphy knew she’d found something special. Now eight, she’s taken part in a class every semester since—each one helping her grow in confidence, creativity and stage presence.

Addison remembers feeling a little nervous at first, but that quickly faded once the class began. “As soon as I saw everyone performing, I just wanted to join in,” she said. That spark turned into a full-blown love of performing and, soon after, she signed up for Finding Nemo Jr. “Ever since that first class, all I want to do is perform on stage.”

And perform she has. Over the past three years, Addison has participated in everything from summer theatre camps to youth productions—each one giving her a new chance to shine. “I like that I can have fun with the roles and make each character my own,” she shared.

She credits her teachers for inspiring her along the way. “These classes are the highlight of my week,” Addison said. “I’m always learning new songs, dances and characters—and having fun with my friends while I do it.”

Of all the programs she’s taken, musical theatre has captured her heart. “I used to be nervous, but now performing makes me happiest,” she said. “I get so excited each new semester to see what show we’ll do next and what role I’ll get to play.”

This fall, Addison is performing in Disney’s Frozen Kids, and she’s eager to keep expanding her skills in singing, dancing and acting. “All three help bring characters to life and share emotions with the audience,” she explained.
