Student Spotlight: Essentially Ellington Regional High School Jazz Band Festival
From music to poetry and everything in between, Dr. Phillips Center’s AdventHealth School of the Arts offers dynamic educational experiences for students year-round. A highlight of the year, is the internationally acclaimed Essentially Ellington Regional High School Jazz Band Festival, presented in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Each year, this non-competitive festival offers an amazing opportunity for students to perform Ellington’s music on a major stage and receive professional, critical feedback from Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians, focusing on mentorship and growth.
In 2026, Over 350 students from 14 different schools across Florida participated in the jam-packed festival. Some traveled from as far as Miami and the panhandle, making the nearly 300-mile trek to participate.
This two-day festival is the only one of its kind in the state of Florida—offering a unique opportunity for students to develop their musical chops and receive personal feedback from some of the most talented jazz musicians in the world through clinics, Q & A’s and masterclasses. Previous Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians included trombonist Mariel Bildsten and trombonist Dr. Ollie Liddell, while previous local clinicians included saxophonist Jeff Rupert, trumpeter Carl Fischer and drummer McClenty Hunter.
Family, friends and jazz enthusiasts were able to witness the final day, with options for either a day pass or a showcase-only ticket. On the last day, student ensembles took the stage inside Steinmetz Hall—performing alongside clinicians in one of the most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world.
