Student Spotlight: Sophia Martinez-Ortiz

Sophia Martinez-Ortiz is a high school senior and a member of Dr. Phillips Center’s AdventHealth School of the Arts Teen Ambassadors Program. With passions for teaching, hospitality and theater, Sophia has been able to bring all her interests into one meaningful experience thanks to this transformative program.

The Teen Ambassadors Program offers 10th to 12th grade students unique opportunities to explore career pathways within the non-performative side of the arts and theater industry. Through the program, Sophia has volunteered at performances, attended professional workshops and participated in a variety of community experiences that have expanded her understanding of how the arts come to life.

One moment that stands out most for Sophia was supporting the 101 Dalmatians kids showcase for a summer camp. For an entire week, she assisted with rehearsals and served as part of the run crew, helping move set pieces onstage during the performance. After the final show, a camper who played Cruella ran up to Sophia and thanked her for helping: “She looked up at me and said it was the best day of her life.”

That moment stuck with Sophia ever since. "That was one of the most gratifying moments of my life. Her words encouraged me and reminded me of why I do what I do. To be a Teen Ambassador means to be a role model to the little kids we pass in the building,” she shared. “We are the leaders and workers to show the new generation that theater is a supportive environment where everyone is welcome.”

One of Sophia’s favorite parts of being a Teen Ambassador is the opportunity to connect with local professionals and arts organizations while learning what it truly takes to create a successful production. Sophia says the program has opened her eyes to countless career possibilities within theater and created many “wow” moments along the way.

She proudly wears her Teen Ambassador polo, exemplifying Dr. Phillips Center’s values and leading with kindness. “Teen Ambassadors is an amazing program because you are surrounded by other teens with similar passions. I always feel welcomed and uplifted— and never put in a box.”

For students hoping to join the program in the future, Sophia’s advice is simple: “You’re stepping into a wonderful program that will open so many doors. Soak it in and enjoy every moment. Take notes, make connections, ask questions, try everything—and be ready to learn.”

The Teen Ambassadors Program runs from September through May, following the school calendar. Applications for the next cohort will open in Summer 2026.
